What type of a gambler are you?

The answer to this question can say a lot about the type of person you are. One is more of a risk taker; someone who is willing to improvise and complete a task without preparation. The other is a planner – someone who likes to know exactly what to expect so that they can prepare for it accordingly.

Even if you tend to be more of a risk taker, certain things in life are much easier to complete with some pre-planning.

Like bringing the proper luggage on a holiday.

Or preparing a certain recipe for dinner.

Or completing copywriting for your blog.

Although finding the best process for copywriting is individually-based, here are six steps that we follow here at Sarah McKenzie Copywriting Services. Maybe they will help you with your own copywriting process, too!

#1) Brainstorm a Concept

Clearly, you can’t get far into the copywriting process without having a topic to write about.

There are many different ways to come up with topics. One option is to think like your customer. What type of question do they often ask of you? What sort of product/service is most frequently purchased from you? You can even use this brainstorming to create a series of “Frequently Asked Questions” posts.

Other topic suggestions include highlighting a new service you’re offering, discussing an industry trend, describing your company’s background or showing how to get the most out of one of your products.

#2) Create an Outline

Oftentimes in the writing process, it’s easy to get writer’s block. This can lead to frustration and possibly even giving up on the blog writing process entirely.

Having an outline that includes subheadings and content ideas helps to keep you on track with your writing. Outlines can stop the writer’s block before it even begins!

#3) Complete Some Research

If your topic is something you’re already well-versed in, you may be able to skip this step – but for many, some sort of research is necessary before writing.

Research competitors’ websites and blogs. Use the Internet to find statistics, background info and quotes (being careful to use proper citation when needed). Don’t forget about completing some keyword research, too!

#4) Put it All Together

Hopefully by now, your writing juices are starting to flow!

Use what you’ve gathered in steps one to three to construct a rough draft of your blog article.

Choosing an uninterrupted time to write usually works best so that you can continue to put your thoughts together seamlessly.

#5) Create an Eye-Catching Title

Even if you have the best, most interesting copy ever, many people won’t read it if it lacks an appealing title.

Choose a title that will reflect your blog article’s copy but still be interesting.

Blog title length is also important. Keeping the title to 70 characters or less ensures that it doesn’t get cut off in search engine results.

If you’re really stuck, there are plenty of blog title generators available on the Internet.

#6) Review, Review, Review

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – editing is key when creating a blog article.

Not only will many of your readers stop reading when your work is riddled with errors, but poor editing can negatively affect your company’s professional image, too.

The best time to edit is never immediately after writing your content. Instead, edit on the following day or at another time when you will better equipped to notice spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes.
